Day 6: Add color for a Whale of a Good Time
It’s Monday so grab your crayons, your watercolor or colored pencils. Today we are joined by two enormous whales from a drawing that didn’t make the cut from my book We’ve Got the Whole World in our Hands. Did you know that the blue whales are the larges animal that ever lived? They get really big- like 90 or more feet and they are heavy too weighing in the same as up to 24 elephants. Humpback whales sing very complex and beautiful songs.
Thanks to all of you for doing your part to keep you, your family, friends and community safe and healthy.
Think BIG and Colorful.
Time to put some color on Friday. Today I’m sharing a mural design that remained a sketch and screams for color. Help me color it and share. Grab your brothers and sisters and print this in sections. Add color, put it together at home and think BIG. Wishing everyone a bright weekend!
Day Four: Dream in Color
It’s Day Four and time for a Coloring Adventure. Here is a cover that didn’t fly for the book Drum Dream Girl written with poetry and rhythm by my good friend Margarita Engle. Green means GO! Have some fun and let your colors speak. You can use crayons or colored pencils or markers, watercolor, whatever you can find.
I’m from Mexico and color is a big part of who I am. It makes me happy to be surrounded by, covered in color. That’s right my clothes, my hand, my hats!
Day 3: Coloring challenge
Glad to hear from many of you finding creative ways to spend time at home. Here is a little help from Teresa Carreño composing music with a friend, from the book Dancing Hands: How Teresa Carreño Played Piano for President Lincoln, a collaboration with the wonderful writer Margarita Engle. Another image that didn’t make the cut but now has found a way to your home.
Just add color!
Day 2 of discovering and coloring. This sketch was created for The Day You Begin written by the remarkable Jacqueline Woodson. This image didn’t make the final cut so it’s up to kids to bring on the colors. Angelina and Rigoberto share the fun of their new friendship and daydreaming. Have fun and make it your own.
Let’s Color our Way to Calm
Creating these posts to help young readers at home during these trying times.
I will be posting black and white drawings from my books that didn’t make the final cut. Hope children and their families will discover drawings never seen before and have the opportunity to color them in their own way. Encourage you to post photos of kids art and coloring in action- let’s showcase their work. Perhaps there are some budding young writers out there who want to create their own stories to share that go with their creations. This first drawing comes from our book Just Ask! Be Different, Be Brave, Be You a collaboration with Supreme Court Justice Sotomayor. It depicts Madison and Arturo who are blind enjoying the outdoors. Picture yourself there as you create, go ahead, have fun and fill it with the colors you see in your imagination. It’s a good way to pass some time.
